Van Cleef & Arpels filed their own invisible setting patent in December of 1933 and called it “serti mysterieux”.
You can't see the prongs in an invisible setting, it looks as if the stones were held by nothing. A grove is cut into the side of the gem allowing it to slide along the rails of the metal.
